The International Women’s Day 2016 took place on the 7th of March 2016. The venue was the St Gertrude Church Hall in Essen city, Germany. About 150 women including men were in attendance. The major objective of the International Women’s Day as established by the United Nation is to celebrate the contribution of women to the economic, political and social development of the international community. It is also an occasion to think about the problems of gender inequality which women continue to suffer in different parts of the world. The International Women’s Day provides a platform for solution seeking for the emancipation of women.

There was a panel discussion which treated the theme of the International Women’s Day 2016 “Make it Happen.” The panel had a brainstorming session on how to make the United Nations Agenda on Gender Equality happen. The podium discussion was followed by a debate on the question “Can there ever be equality between man and woman?” The debate brought out the various nuances of equality.
The International Women’s Day 2016 occasion was graced by Mr. Klaus Dieter-Pfahls, the Mayor of Essen Dellwig who officially represented the City of Essen. Dr. Joy Alemazung (Project Manager) of Engagement Global gGmbH represented Engagement Global. Countries in attendance were; Brazil, Cameroon, Nigerian, Ghana, Uganda, India and Germany.
There were cultural dances from different countries. Guest were treated to international buffet and children were given gifts.
